5 day trips less than an hour away from Barcelona

It’s quite normal if we’re travelling for a fairly long period to get fed up of the city we’re visiting, and it is also enriching to find out a bit more about the area’s culture, sites and nature. Sometimes you can find great spots if you look a bit further. This is why today we’d like to suggest 5 day trips less than an hour away from Barcelona.

montserrat

Montserrat

This magical mountain is barely half an hour from Barcelona by train and is probably one of the most visited. This Catalan symbol offers spectacular shapes in the rock that have been formed during centuries. At the top we can visit the Santa Maria de Montserrat sanctuary and museum, where we can admire the “black virgin” or “la Moreneta”, a depiction of Virgin Mary with baby Jesus which has dark features.

 How to get to Montserrat

Train: Get the R5 Train in direction to Manresa at Plaça Espanya to the Montserrat stop

Car: Get the Autovía B-23 and A-2, Barcelona – Lleida ( Montserrat exit);  get the  BP-1103 road to Montserrat.

Sitges

This picturesque town is also a quick train trip away. If you’re fed up of the crowded Barcelona beaches, this is the perfect alternative to sunbathe in a gorgeous bay often compared to Saint Tropez beaches. Moreover, you can take a walk along its narrow romantic streets full of Mediterranean houses and spot the modernist heritage left by Catalan artists in the early twentieth century.

If you’re a fan of films, at the beginning of October the city hosts an International Horror and Sci-Fi Film Festival which is well worth going.

Port Aventura

The theme park is just over an hour away if you count the special train that takes you directly to the park from Tarragona. This massive theme park is great for both children and adults; it has different settings inspired by various parts of the world such as Polynesia, China, Mexico … There you’ll be able to enjoy many live shows, white knuckle rides and plenty of cafés and restaurants to relax. By the theme park there is also a water park that opens in the summer if you’re planning to go there on a boiling day.

Tarragona

This city facing the Mediterranean is a must see for history-loving people. Once one of the most important Roman settlements in the Iberian Peninsula centuries ago, this city still has lots of its Roman monuments still standing: from the roman circus, walls to an impressive amphitheater. Walking along Tarragona’s old town is stumbling upon ancient ruins, even in some of its restaurants you can eat between Roman walls.

Another perk of the city is its long beaches such as l’Arrabassada or Platja Llarga.

Located in the heart of the Natural Park of Montseny, this sanctuary is the most beautiful place to end an excursion across the Montseny Mountain from the villages of Bigues or Riells. The Romanesque sanctuary was built in a rock and features an impressive waterfall. It’s surrounded by the rocky cliffs of Cingles de Bertí, a place that trekking fans will surely enjoy.
