Montjuïc Castle (Castell de Montjuïc in Catalan) is located in the mountain of Montjuïc, one of the highest points of the city togheter with the Tibidabo mountain. It is a place you can’t miss because its filled with mistery and lot of history.
The Montjuïc is a mountain with a lot of history. At the beginning, before there was a castle, there was no construction and it was a point of surveillanceand a cemetery. In the XVI century the first construction in the mountain was built. It was a kind of lighthouse. During the XVII the government built a fortress above the building which has been modified through the years and has become the building we can see today.
The Castle has witnessed many battles, but certainly, the most important one was during the Spanish Civil War and the Franco Regime. During the Spanish Civil War it was a prison run by the forces of the Second Republic and a where they sentenced and kill the people belonging to the insurgents. On 1939 it fell into Franco’s hands and they used it as a prison too. One of the most significant murder during the Francoism was Lluis Companys, the former president of Catalonia who declared the Catalan Republic.
At the moment the Castle is just a touristic place with lots of history, where you can see all the city of Barcelona.
The Castle is located at the top of the mountain. To get there you have several options; by foot, by car, by subway, bike or funicular. My personal recommendation is to get there by funicular or the bus 150 and then descend walking, it is less tiring and you can enjoy the parks on the mountain. If you choose to go by funicular you will have to take it on the metro Station Paral·lel and then change to the cable car that arrives to the top.
In addition, if you decide to get to the castle or descend it by foot you can’t miss the other viewpoints on the mountain:
- Explanada Miramar, where you can see the Barcelona Harbor and many of the biggest buildings of the city. Besides, you can walk through the nereast gardens which are beautiful.
- El mirador del Alcalde, where you can see as well a part of the Barcelona Harbor. The viewpoint itself is a piece of art, itsground is a collage made of glass an ceramic.
