Paseo de Gracia is one of the most famous avenues in Barcelona. Due to its fame, lots of nice shops and the best restaurants are located in this great avenue.  Furthermore, you will find the Barcelona‘s most emblematic monuments.This street is the place where you will find La Pedrera, Casa Batlló by Antoni Gaudí, the casa Ametller by Puig i Cadafalchand La Casa Lleó i Morera by Domènech i Montaner.

Paseo de Gracia is known for its wide sidewalks which are more than 5 km in length. It has become one of the most expensive streets of Barcelona and the second one of Spain. So it is not surprising that the big fashion houses on this street have found their place to settle in Barcelona.

History of Paseo de Gracia

Originally, the Paseo de Gracia was known as the way of Jesus, in order to connect the city of Barcelona to the village of Gracia. In 1827 the first part of this street, with a width of 42meters; was opened. It was the place chosen by the Barcelona’s aristocracy to build their farms. It was the citizens of Barcelona‘s favorite recreation area. It was the beginning of the remodeling of the main district of Barcelona, which is known today as ​​the Eixample.

Between 1900 and 1914, the Paseo de Gracia established itself as the center of the Catalan bourgeoisie, which led young architects of the time to break the taboos of classical architecture in that era . At that time,  Antoni Gaudí, Josep Puig, Lluís Domènech i Montaner and Enric Sagnier were hired.

Besides clothing stores, you can see that Apple also chose the Paseo de Gracia to locate its first official store in Barcelona. It is also the case of Vinçon,  the most exclusive decoration store in Barcelona. You’ll find it a few meters from La Pedrera.

Location of the Paseo de Gracia

You could say that Paseo de Gracia is the backbone of Barcelona. It is the road that connects the Old Town, Ciutat Vella with one of the most popular districts of the city, Gracia. It has a large communication network with different subway lines, buses and railways.
